What is Indonesian cinnamon?
Indonesian cinnamon is usually Cinnamomum burmannii, a type of cassia also traded as Korintje or cassia vera. It's darker and stronger than Ceylon cinnamon, and much of it grows in Sumatra. Buyers use it for spice packing, baking, beverages, and seasoning blends.
"Korintje" gets used loosely in listings. If your specification depends on it, say so in your first message, and we'll tell you whether the lot we can offer fits.
What to specify when you buy Indonesian cinnamon
Two sellers can both offer "Grade A" and mean different things, so a grade name alone won't get you a useful quotation. Give us the numbers you work to.
| Detail | What to tell us | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stick length and diameter | For example, your cut length in cm | Must fit your packing or processing line |
| Grade | Your grade name and what it means to you | Labels vary between sellers |
| Moisture | Your maximum, in % | Affects storage and shipping |
| Volatile oil | Your minimum, in % | Linked to aroma and strength |
| Foreign matter | Your maximum, in % | Affects cleaning and yield |
| Tests | Lead, Salmonella, or others your market requires | Limits differ by market and product |
| Packing and volume | Bag or carton size, and total quantity | Sets the shipping plan and price |
For a sense of the range: Indonesian listings we reviewed in November 2026 quoted moisture limits of 12–14% and volatile oil of about 2–2.5% or more. Those are other sellers' published figures, not an industry standard or Arkana Source's specification.
Grades are messy too. ISO 6538 covers Indonesian-type cassia and uses grades from AA to C, while market listings also use labels like A1, A2, and SP. So ask what a label means in numbers. We'll do the same.
Sticks, cut pieces, or powder?
We currently focus on whole rolled sticks. They suit buyers who repack whole cinnamon or want to grind it themselves, and you can inspect the shape and color before processing. If you need another form, ask us and we'll check availability.
Grinding it yourself also keeps testing and processing under your own control, which matters more now that ground cinnamon is under closer scrutiny.
Is Indonesian cinnamon safe to import?
It can be, but check the requirements for your own market and product before you order. Two topics come up most often with cinnamon.
Lead. The US FDA continues to test cinnamon at import and may add firms to its import alert. A wave of illnesses tied to cinnamon in fruit puree pouches put the issue in the spotlight, and the FDA has since warned about lead in several ground cinnamon products. If you're importing into the US, tell us you need lead results before you order.
Coumarin. Cassia generally contains more coumarin than Ceylon cinnamon, and the EU limits coumarin in certain foods. If you make baked goods or cereals for Europe, check your recipe against those limits.
Don't rely on a seller's general assurance for either one. Ask for test results that apply to the lot you're buying. Our quality page explains how we handle these requests.
